While stress at work is common, searching for a low-stress job is difficult, if not impossible. Work stress has significant health consequences that range from relatively benign (like getting more colds and flus) to potentially serious (such as heart disease and metabolic syndrome).
A more realistic approach to reduce stress at your current job is to adopt effective coping strategies. Here are some stress management steps you can try if you are finding it hard to cope with work stress.
Step 1: Listen to music
If you’re feeling overpowered by a stressful situation, try taking a break and listening to relaxing music. Playing calm music has a positive effect on the body and brain, can reduce cortisol, (a hormone linked to stress) and lower blood pressure.
It’s best to listen to slow, quiet classical music, but if classical really isn’t your thing, try listening to ocean or nature sounds. It may sound cheesy, however they have the same relaxing effects to music.
Step 2: Laugh it off
Laughter releases endorphins that boost mood and decrease levels of the stress, causing hormones adrenaline and cortisol. Laughing deceives your nervous system into making you happy.
Our suggestion: watch some classic comedy skits. Those are so hilarious, you’ll soon be cracking up.
Step 3: Exercise (even for a minute)
Exercise doesn’t essentially mean training for a marathon or powerlifting at the gym. A short walk around the office/remote workplace or standing up simply to stretch during a break at work can provide instant relief in a stressful situation.
Getting your blood moving releases endorphins and can boost your mood almost immediately.
Step 4: Eat right
Stress levels and a correct diet are related closely. When we’re overpowered, we frequently forget to eat well and resort to consuming fatty, sugary snack foods as a pick-me-up.
Try to avoid sugary snacks and plan ahead. Vegetables and fruits are always good, and fish with high levels of omega-3 fatty acids have been shown to mitigate the stress symptoms. A tuna sandwich really is brain food.
Step 5: Sleep better
Everyone knows that you can lose sleep through stress. Sadly, lack of sleep is also a vital cause of stress. This vicious cycle causes the body and brain to get out of whack and only gets unpleasant with time.
Make sure to get seven to eight hours of sleep as recommended by doctors. Switch the TV off earlier, dim the lights, and give yourself time to relax prior to going to bed. It may be the most successful stress buster in this list.
